Fundamental Rights constitute the cornerstone of the Indian Constitution and represent the essential freedoms guaranteed to every individual for the protection of human dignity, equality, liberty, and justice. While the Constitution provides a comprehensive framework for safeguarding these rights, their effective realization largely depends upon public awareness and accessibility. A significant proportion of India's population, particularly those residing in rural and economically weaker sections, remains unaware of their constitutional rights and the legal remedies available in cases of violation. This lack of awareness often results in discrimination, exploitation, denial of justice, and limited access to constitutional protections.

This research paper critically examines the importance of social awareness regarding Fundamental Rights in India from a socio-legal perspective. It explores the constitutional provisions relating to Fundamental Rights, analyses the role of educational institutions, legal aid authorities, civil society organizations, media, and governmental initiatives in promoting constitutional literacy. The study further evaluates judicial contributions in expanding the scope of Fundamental Rights through progressive constitutional interpretation. It also identifies practical challenges that hinder the effective dissemination of constitutional awareness, including illiteracy, poverty, digital inequality, and inadequate legal education.

The paper concludes that constitutional guarantees can achieve their true purpose only when citizens possess adequate knowledge of their rights and the confidence to enforce them through legal mechanisms. Strengthening legal awareness programmes, improving civic education, enhancing digital accessibility, and encouraging community participation are essential steps toward building an informed and constitutionally empowered society.
