Human rights and social justice movements: An analysis
Authors
Dr. Padma Singh
Abstract
Social justice movements have been at the forefront of advocating for
human rights and combating systemic oppression and inequality throughout
history. This paper examines the intrinsic connection between human rights and
social justice movements, analysing their intertwined goals, strategies, and
impacts. Through a multidisciplinary lens, the research explores the
theoretical underpinnings of human rights and social justice, tracing their
evolution and the diverse forms they have taken across different contexts and
regions. The paper delves into case studies of influential social justice
movements, such as the civil rights movement, feminist movements, LGBTQ+ rights
movements, and indigenous rights movements, among others. It analyses the
complex power dynamics, resistance strategies, and the role of grassroots
mobilization in shaping human rights discourse and effecting socio-political
change. Furthermore, the paper critically examines the challenges and
limitations faced by these movements, including institutional barriers, state
repression, and ideological divisions. By synthesizing insights from various
disciplines, this research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the
symbiotic relationship between human rights and social justice movements,
highlighting their collective pursuit of justice, equality, and human dignity.
